Sound composition research

Apartment Recording Studies focuses on personal recordings made in temporary accommodations I have occupied in Canada since moving from Switzerland for my studies. The recordings were made using a JRF contact microphone placed on windows, walls, and household appliances. I focused primarily on the dichotomy between the interior and exterior, exploring the ambient noises that surround us daily. The idea was to highlight the concept of a sound bubble that an apartment might embody, through which the sounds of the external city can penetrate and blend with the sounds inside. The apartment becomes a receptacle where many things pass through - including us, its occupants - but also light, city noises, or those of the building itself.
The project has evolved significantly since its inception. I initially wanted to create a recording setup by going to people's homes. The idea was to record the walls, edit a sound sequence, play it back with the person living in the space, and finally record a conversation with the person responding to the experience of listening. Due to the scale of the project and the time available, I refocused on my own apartment and the experience I had here.
This project does not aim to be a documentation or a catalogue of recorded sounds, but rather to create an immersive sensory experience that evokes the idea of a maternal womb - or a sonic cocoon - that has surrounded me since my arrival in Montreal.
